This article contains the following:

• Video 1.mov (7.64MB) SEM of an adipocyte, plasma membrane seen from the outside and inside of the cell. SEM images of the cell surface and of plasma membrane sheets (as described in figures 1 and 2, respectively) were used to reconstruct a scale-correct 3D image of an adipocyte. Animation was done by David Stralfors.
