Supplemental Material

The time lapse series in movies 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2, 3-1, 3-2, 4-1 and 4-2 were prepared with CLSM using 63X water objective (N/A 1.2) and visible light and FM4-64 channels. Images were taken at 10 second intervals for 10 minutes. Movies 1-1, 1-2, 3-1, 3-2, 4-1 and 4-2 correspond to Figure 6 panels B, H and N, respectively. The root hairs shown in movies 2-1 and 2-2 and figure 6-E are from the same root.

The time lapse series was prepared on CLSM with a 20X dry objective (N/A of 0.5). Images were taken at 30 seconds intervals and focus was maintained through the experiment.
